A Periodontist is a key member of your dental healthcare team when dealing with supporting structures of your teeth and implants. The doctors have completed graduate specialty training in Periodontology and Implant Therapy. This training is a three year residency after the initial completion of a Doctorate in Dental Surgery (DDS) degree. Periodontists’ treat and assist in the care of gum disease, bone loss, gum recession, tooth pain, tooth loss, replacement of teeth with dental implants and the growth of bone around roots or implants.

What is Periodontal Disease?

Periodontal or Gum Disease is the process of losing bone and gum that support the roots of your teeth. This can be caused by plaque, tartar and bacteria build-up around the teeth and under the gum tissue. There are aggressive forms of Gum Disease that can occur in a very short period of time. If Gum Disease is not managed properly you can lose your teeth.

Who can get Gum Disease?

All of us are susceptible to Gum Disease and it affects about 80% of the general population over the age of 35.

How to check for Gum Disease?

A comprehensive periodontal examination is needed to check for the signs of Gum Disease. This is completed by measuring the bone/gum attachment along the roots and x-rays to look at bone levels. To find out your options and potential need, an examination will be needed. This will insure that you are well informed of options.

What are risks for Gum Disease to develop?

Primary factors that contribute to your risk of developing Gum Disease include; tobacco use, bacteria/plaque build-up, diabetes, poor or ill-fitting crowns/fillings, food impaction, immune conditions, shifts in hormone levels and trauma.

What is a dental implant?

A dental implant is a titanium screw or anchor that is placed into the bone of your jaw to replace missing or lost teeth. They are often placed where the roots of teeth used to be and allow for the connection of crowns/teeth to the top of the implant via a connecting piece, often called an abutment.

What are the benefits?

What is Gum Tissue Grafting?

Soft tissue grafting surgical procedure is designed to treat areas of root exposure and gum loss. This can include moving gum tissue from one location of your mouth to another. The intention is to prevent further gum recession, cover sensitive, cavitated or exposed root surfaces, cover root surfaces that lack bone, or to improve overall tissue esthetics. This procedure can be done around teeth or dental implants.

What causes gum recession?

Common causes of gum recession can include aggressive brushing habits, trauma, muscle attachments, gum disease, tobacco use and genetics.
